Aquavit 43 Mule

The Moscow Mule's Nordic cousin—spiced, bright, and surprisingly warming

The Moscow Mule was never really about Moscow—it was about marketing. In 1941, three men with excess inventory (vodka, ginger beer, and copper mugs) created one of the most successful cocktail campaigns in history. The drink worked not because of its Russian pedigree but because ginger beer and citrus have an alchemical relationship that transforms almost any clear spirit into something refreshing and complex. So what happens when you replace vodka's neutral canvas with aquavit's botanical intensity and add Licor 43's vanilla warmth? You get something that makes the original Mule seem quaint by comparison. The caraway and dill notes in aquavit play beautifully with ginger's spice, while the vanilla-citrus character of 43 creates a bridge between the herbal spirit and the bright lime juice. This isn't a Scandinavian Mule or a Nordic Mule—it's an entirely different creature that happens to share the same format. It tastes like what glogg would be if it were served cold and carbonated, if glogg had been invented by bartenders instead of by people trying to survive winter.

Instructions

0/5 complete

Build over ice

Fill a highball glass or copper mug with ice cubes.

Copper mugs are traditional but not essential—any tall glass works.

Add spirits and citrus

Add aquavit, Licor 43, and lime juice to the glass.

Pour in this order to ensure good mixing.

Top with ginger beer

Fill with ginger beer, leaving space at the top.

Use a good ginger beer—Fever-Tree, Bundaberg, or Q Ginger Beer all work beautifully.

Stir gently

Give it 1-2 gentle stirs to combine.

Don't overmix—you want to preserve the ginger beer's fizz.

Garnish generously

Add a fresh mint sprig and lime wheel.

Slap the mint gently to release its oils.
