Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie
Breakfast disguised as a milkshake
The chocolate peanut butter smoothie occupies a peculiar niche in the breakfast universe: it tastes like it should be forbidden but is, nutritionally speaking, quite respectable. The frozen banana provides natural sweetness and that characteristic thick texture. The Greek yogurt contributes protein and tang. The peanut butter adds fat and satiety. The cocoa is where the magic happens—pure chocolate flavor with minimal sugar.
What you get is something that tastes remarkably like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup in liquid form, yet contains actual nutrients and will keep you fueled through the morning. Children, famously suspicious of anything that might be good for them, drink these without complaint. Adults, famously suspicious of anything that might be enjoyable, drink these without guilt. It's that rare recipe that works for everyone.
The Thermomix makes quick work of the frozen banana—something that can tax lesser blenders—but any high-powered machine will do. The key is ensuring the banana is properly frozen solid. A thawed or partially frozen banana will give you something closer to chocolate milk than smoothie. Keep a rotation of peeled, sliced bananas in your freezer and breakfast becomes a three-minute operation.
Method
-
1
Add all ingredients
Place frozen banana, yogurt, cocoa powder, peanut butter, agave, and milk into TM bowl or blender.
💡 Use a properly frozen banana—partially thawed produces thin results.
-
2
Blend until smooth
Blend on Speed 7 for 20 seconds (Thermomix) or high speed for 30-45 seconds (regular blender) until completely smooth and creamy.
-
3
Serve immediately
Pour into a tall glass and drink at once. The smoothie will separate and thin if left to sit.
Notes & Tips
Banana preparation
- • Peel and slice bananas before freezing. Attempting to peel a frozen banana is an exercise in frustration. Freeze in a single layer on a sheet, then transfer to a bag.
Peanut butter selection
- • Natural peanut butter (ingredients: peanuts, salt) makes a better smoothie than sweetened commercial varieties. The oil separation in natural peanut butter is normal—stir before using.
Sweetness adjustment
- • Taste before adding sweetener. A very ripe frozen banana may provide enough sweetness on its own. Agave and honey are interchangeable.
Variations
- • Add 1 tbsp oats for extra fiber and thickness
- • Use almond butter instead of peanut butter
- • Add a handful of spinach (it disappears completely)
- • Substitute chocolate protein powder for some of the cocoa
Make-ahead
- • Prep smoothie packs by portioning dry ingredients and frozen banana into freezer bags. Add liquid and blend when ready.
